Editor's Viewpoint: Losing with grace

There is no doubt that boxer Paul McCloskey lost his world title bout in controversial circumstances. Yes, he was well behind on points and yes, he had suffered a cut. But the decision by a doctor to stop the fight did appear to be premature, or, at least, hurried after only a superficial examination.

Yet the fighter has conducted himself like a winner. He may feel he was robbed of his big opportunity but he behaved with dignity, simply demanding justice and a re-match, however unlikely that will be. Losing with grace is one of the most difficult lessons in sport, but Paul has given a master class in it and remains a role model to any young man thinking of taking up the most demanding sport of all.
