Editor's Viewpoint: Man for all seasons

Public art is always a subject for lively discussion. Some people want more of it, others feel it is a waste of public money. But even the greatest critic had to crack a smile at the sculpture in the Co Down village of Clough.

The life-sized depiction of a farmer and his cow was the victim of vandals, but for once their handiwork added a little gaiety to the subject.

They painted a sash on the figure. While those who funded the project initially may have been a little miffed, others felt the new addition was appropriate at the height of the marching season.

Perhaps this will become a piece of living art with the farmer changing appearance in keeping with the seasons.
