Editor's Viewpoint: McDonnell out of step

Remembrance Sunday is a poignant occasion for very many people as they remember loved ones of previous generations who died as a result of conflict.

The annual commemorations have become more widely accepted in Northern Ireland and in the Republic in recent times as the sacrifice of nationalists as well as unionists is recalled and honoured.

It is therefore very disappointing that Dr Alasdair McDonnell, the new leader of the SDLP, could not follow the example of his predecessor, Margaret Ritchie, and wear a poppy at yesterday's commemoration at the Belfast Cenotaph. He appeared to be making some tired old protest but all it really did was dishonour the valiant dead.
