Editor's Viewpoint: Pair's frame fame

Published 08/06/2011

Northern Ireland artist Alan Duke is desperate to find out the identity of a married couple who were the unwitting stars of one of his paintings.

They wandered into the frame when he was photographing a seascape on his beloved north coast and he drew them into the finished work.

Solving the riddle of the couple may satisfy the curiosity of both Alan and some of his patrons, but it could pay in the long run for their identities to remain unknown, giving the painting's iconic stature and an air of mystery. Such mystique didn't do the Mona Lisa any harm, did it?
