Editor's Viewpoint: Power of the poppets
For many people today in the new Northern Ireland it is impossible to believe just how dark those early days of the Troubles in the 1970s really were.
Belfast's Europa Hotel, now celebrating its 40th anniversary, became a symbol of those days as it defied the bombers to continue in business, earning itself the most bombed hotel in Europe tag.
Almost unbelievably amidst all the mayhem, the Europa's Penthouse with its famous poppets brought a touch of glamour to the city. Although the poppets may offend some modern sensibilities, in this time of economic gloom perhaps we need a resurrection of that spirit and joy for life.
