Editor's Viewpoint: Road to no town

At a time when Belfast's commercial heart is being bled to death by a mixture of austerity and protests, unbelievably the Department for Regional Development is planning to create its own disruption through stage two of its Belfast on the Move strategy.

Has it not occurred to anyone in the Department that what the city really needs is more customers coming into the centre? Even if the roadworks are carried out at night, bedding in new traffic arrangements will cause problems leading to many shoppers abandoning the city and going elsewhere. Surely it would make more sense to delay the project to a more opportune time?
