Editor's Viewpoint: Rubbish tactics

Even Big Brother creator, George Orwell, would have been hard-pressed to imagine the day when bugs would be placed in householders’ bins.

Belfast and Antrim councils have been exposed as secreting micro-chips in their bins to check if ratepayers are recycling properly.

The councils would be better advised to concentrate on educating their ratepayers on how to recycle effectively and also assuring them that segregating rubbish really does have a benefit. Snooping is about as low as going through people’s rubbish and is likely to discourage them from disposing of their waste in the approved manner.
