Editor's Viewpoint: Salute to a visionary

Sometimes, in the pursuit of foreign investors, we can overlook the great success of our indigenous firms.

Almac is one such company which specialises in cutting edge pharmaceutical and clinical products. Its latest diagnostic innovation, a test which can show the likelihood of colon cancer recurring in a patient, will be an invaluable aid to clinicians in developing effective therapy regimes.

Almac was founded by Sir Allen McClay who had earlier set up pharmaceutical company, Galen. He was a visionary entrepreneur who, ironically, succumbed to cancer, but who created firms which produced the sort of high value employment which this province desperately needs. He proved local people can have the expertise to lead the world.
