Editor's Viewpoint: Sense must prevail

It seems incredible that the PSNI Constable Peadar Heffron, who was seriously injured in a dissident republican bomb attack, has lost the first stage of his bid to win compensation for industrial injury.

His claim has been turned down because of the harsh interpretation of an arcane rule that he was not fully on duty at the time, though it could equally be argued that he was on his way to work and was indeed on duty.

It is bad enough that this brave policeman has had to suffer horrific injuries and to face such a challenging aftermath, without having to suffer from nit-picking bureaucracy. This is a clear case where common-sense must prevail.
