Editor's Viewpoint: Smart investment

Published 28/07/2011

Mention atomic and molecular physics and most of us would find our eyes glazing over, just like some of the scientists in our photographs published today of an important conference in Belfast.

For us mere mortals, of course, the subject would be well beyond our |comprehension, but it is all in a day’s work for the physicists who have flown here from 53 countries.

Attracting the conference is a huge feather in the cap of the city’s academic community and shows that Northern Ireland is contributing to the cutting edge of science, one application of which could be a breakthrough in cancer treatment. Now that’s not boring.
