Editor's Viewpoint: Spud has a local flavour
There is nothing more down to earth than a good potato, and the humble Comber spud is well on the way to receiving official recognition as being unique to the geographical area where it is grown.
It is time that the whole world was made aware of this. The supporters of the Comber potato are now taking their case to the European Commission for "Protected Geographical Status," and by this time next year their coveted PGI status should be in place.
This means that no-one else can claim to grow the Comber potato, and its unique flavour and quality will continue to delight diners with its own distinctive name. The good news is that very soon, the Comber spud will have it all on a plate.
