Editor's Viewpoint: Take pride in place

Eamonn Holmes, for all his fame, has never forgotten his home city of Belfast and he has added his not inconsiderable weight to this newspaper's campaign to clean up the province.

We are organising a Big Spring Clean in a week's time, in association with TIDY Northern Ireland, recruiting an army of volunteers to bin the litter.

As Eamonn points out, the campaign is not simply about removing eyesore rubbish, but also getting people to have pride and respect for their environment. It is easy to say that removing litter is solely a job for statutory authorities. Certainly they have their job to do, but each of us can make it easier by ensuring that we do not deface the streets or countryside in the first place.
