Editor's Viewpoint: The new wave

Every cloud has a silver lining, or so they say.

That certainly is the belief of Northern Ireland surfer Al Mennie and his friends who long to tackle the biggest waves. While the rest of us snuggled further into our overcoats, they were waiting to ride 3-foot breakers off the Giant's Causeway. It would take a huge leap of imagination to think of the Irish Sea in February as a surfers' paradise to compare with California or Hawaii, but for the stars of the sport that is what it was. These adrenalin junkies love to ride the huge waves and for once were able to do it in the province. They'll be playing Beach Boy records in Portrush next.
