For a boy band that was literally manufactured and who could only come third on X Factor, One Direction have become a pop sensation.
Not only have they proved extremely popular in the UK — witness the four sell-out concerts in Belfast from tomorrow night — but they have also cracked America, a notoriously hard market for British acts.
The five members of the band have the youth and looks to appeal to the most important demographic in pop, teenage girls, and the Odyssey will be packed to the rafters with the group’s legion of fans for all their shows. They now attract the sort of female hysteria that once greeted the Beatles and they didn’t do too badly out of the industry.
