Editor's Viewpoint: The wrong move

It is understandable why fallen industrialist Sean Quinn is still held in high regard around the Fermanagh-Cavan border where his business empire is by far the largest employer. He has put money in the pockets of many people who would otherwise have had to leave the area to find a job.

But, although his family has strong ties with the GAA, there is some unease that this sporting body, or at least prominent members of it, should come out so strongly in his defence in contradiction of court verdicts and the fact that his nephew is a fugitive from justice. Having distanced itself in recent times from political overtones, the GAA might have been better advised to keep its distance on this issue also.
