As Londonderry gears up for its City of Culture year in 2013 it has been given a ringing endorsement as a place to visit by travel bible, the Lonely Planet guidebook. It was listed as the fourth best city in the world to go to. That is the sort of recommendation that money cannot buy and will be viewed as authoritative by visitors and international travel professionals.
In the past Derry may have felt neglected, but the city has undergone something of a renaissance in recent times and next year will see an exciting programme of events taking place there, including the first ever Turner Prize exhibition outside of London. It now has the chance to prove that there is real substance behind all the publicity.
