Editor's Viewpoint: Too close for comfort

Volcanic ash is not the only potential hazard in UK airspace, it seems. Passengers on a flight from Belfast to Leeds had a lucky escape when a fighter plane travelling faster than a bullet came within 400 feet of their aircraft over Blackpool.

Now civilian flights through that part of Lancashire have been restricted to avoid any repetition of the near miss. The only comforting part of this story is that the jet fighter was going so fast that even the pilot of the civilian aircraft did not see it. The incident was recorded by air traffic controllers and there was no alarm among passengers - but that is not necessarily how they will relate their experience.
