Editor's Viewpoint: Turner prize coup

In the midst of such gloomy headlines, there is good news from Londonderry, which will host the prestigious Turner Prize in its 2013 'City of Culture' programme.

The Turner Prize itself has created controversy more than once, but without doubt it is one of the most important events and titles in the cultural calendar.

The city has been long noted for its rich culture, particularly in music, but it also has a good record in the arts generally, and there is no doubt that the acquisition of the Turner Prize is precisely the kind of event which will give Derry's year a special boost.
