Editor's Viewpoint: We must protect Giant's Causeway

The Giant's Causeway

Some rocks thought to come from the Giant’s Causeway have fetched an astonishing £20,000 at auction.

Let us hope that does not encourage others to chip away at the province’s premier tourist attraction and a protected World Heritage site.

The Causeway is a national treasure — in spite of Samuel Johnson’s description as worth seeing but not worth going to see - and, as such, must be protected from those who would deface it.

Perhaps, like Greece and its long-running dispute with the UK over the Elgin Marbles, we should demand that our Causeway rocks are returned to their rightful location.
