The Ulster Unionist leader Sir Reg Empey is right to caution the Orange Order over calls to protest against the visit of Pope Benedict to Britain later this year.
He has pointed out that the head of a Church has the right to take part in a pastoral visit to its members, and the Pope is no exception. He is perfectly entitled to visit Britain, with the approval of the Queen and her Government.
A protest against the Pope would be a great embarrassment to Her Majesty. The Orange Order members should question where their true loyalties lie, and they should listen carefully to the wise counsel of the UU leader.
