Editor's Viewpoint: Worthy white lie

Most young men don't really want their mothers to know what they get up to. But Lisburn soldier Gary Prout hid his activities more than most.

For while he was in the front line against the Taliban in Afghanistan he told his mother he was working in an office.

Only when he was awarded a Conspicuous Gallantry Cross for exceptional bravery in rescuing a wounded comrade and helping his patrol escape an ambush did his mother uncover his white lie. No doubt this proud mum has now forgiven her son, but now she doesn't know whether to believe another son. He really has an office job in Afghanistan. At least that what he says.
