Festival a timely reminder of our cultural diversity

One person who will have been delighted with the record turnout at the Mela multi-cultural festival in Belfast at the weekend – an astonishing 25,000 people attended – is its founder Nisha Tandon. Only on Saturday this newspaper reported how the upsurge in racism here was making her consider leaving after 37 years in the province.

But as the Mela confirmed, Northern Ireland is a welcoming home for many different nationalities and cultures. The racist attacks which often distort that image are carried out by an appalling minority who do not reflect the true nature of local people.

We need talents like Nisha and hope that she now feels confident in continuing to weave her magic in creating a truly diverse society in the province.
