Fifa punishment for Suarez must have real bite

Luis Suarez is a very gifted footballer but he cannot be excused for his latest transgression on the field.

It appears that the world accepts he is guilty yet again of biting an opponent and if Fifa agrees with that verdict there can only be one sentence – a very lengthy ban from international football.

Already some people are arguing that it would be wrong to rob Uruguay or the World Cup of one of its most talented players. But his status should not play any part in determining what sentence to pass. Millions of impressionable young people watching this tournament would be given entirely the wrong message if he gets off with a light sentence.

Wrong behaviour must have serious consequences.
