Footballer Mark was a top class goalscorer and a fine man

Mark Farren was a fine footballer - being the record goalscorer for Derry City FC - but, as every tribute paid after his sad passing stressed, an even finer man.

Team-mates remember him as a man without vanity despite his exploits on the field, while others point to his courageous if vain fight against the cancerous brain tumour which eventually killed him at the far too young age of 33. After initial surgery, he even went back to playing the game he loved and excelled at, showing his determination to beat his most indomitable foe. His wife and family circle are devastated, but should also be proud that his memory will last long.
