The new independent market in the centre of Belfast - the first to be granted a licence in 400 years - literally feeds a large consumer demand for such facilities. We only have to look at the success of the annual Continental market at Belfast City Hall and the long-running weekly St George's markets to see the appeal of stall trading.

This latest market will give customers more choice, a necessary ingredient in any retail mix, and the opportunity to buy and eat at the same time. The good weather yesterday helped the market get off to a flying start, and in the long term it could prove to be just the ray of sunshine that the city centre needs.
