Homegrown talent a source of pride for all of us

Queen's University has chosen wisely in its decision to appoint Professor Patrick Johnston as its new Vice-Chancellor.

He is an exceptionally talented cancer expert who has helped to transform both research in to the disease and treatment of it within the province. He has a global reputation for his work which can only reflect positively on the university.

To have someone of his calibre at the helm should encourage more talented staff to come to the university, just as his reputation brought new expertise to the province in the fight against cancer. And it should be a matter of pride that he is a man born and bred in Northern Ireland who made his name internationally but returned home to put his talents to good use for the whole community.
