Hurling on Shankill

As we revelled in Rory McIlroy's US Open win, an equally astounding sporting spectacle was taking place in Belfast. The president of the GAA was in the loyalist heartland of the Shankill Road to watch Protestant schoolchildren playing hurling.

The games were part of an on-going initiative which sees Catholic and Protestant schools engage in cross-community sport. Not so long ago they might have been hurling stones at each other. Of course there are still divisions and sectarianism in Northern Ireland, but some of the old beliefs are being challenged and some barriers being dismantled, and sport is one of the chief weapons used.
