It's just not cricket
If ever the phrase 'it's just not cricket' was appropriate then a match at Limavady at the weekend was a fitting setting. A local player knocked over his stumps in disgust at being given out caught behind off the first ball. An emotional response at a perceived wrong decision can be understood, if not be tolerated. And Limavady acted swiftly and rightly in disciplining the player.
But what happened next was beyond the pale. The player who claimed the catch was allegedly assaulted during the tea interval. Cricket Ireland must take stern action to show that such behaviour will not be tolerated. In other sports like soccer players may feign injury or seek an unfair advantage, but surely standards still apply in the game whose very name is synonymous with fair play.
