It's not a hanging offence, but City Council must do better

Our local authorities do sterling work in attempting to brighten up our cities, towns and villages through floral displays and they do much to lift people's spirits and put an acceptable face on the built-up environment for visitors to our shores.

However, the hanging baskets in east Belfast which we feature today have produced the exact opposite effect, causing discontent among residents and creating an undesirable vista for anyone passing through. Surely the City Council can do more than simply let the displays wither away and the soil dry out before removing these eyesores. Time to turn over a new leaf perhaps?

Editor's Viewpoint There are many demands on our charity from deserving causes but it would be a hard heart which is not moved by the appeal by twins Amy and Liam Murray for donations to the Cancer Focus Christmas appeal. Having lost their father Liam to cancer six years ago, they know the value of the services offered by the organisation. Cancer is expected to hit one in two people in the coming years and there will be many households with empty chairs this Christmas...
