Janet McCollum is proof the glass ceiling is there to be broken
Janet McCollum is one of a rare breed, the head of a Top 100 company in Northern Ireland. Indeed she is the CEO of the top firm here, Moy Park, the poultry processing business. She has played a pivotal role in helping the firm grow to its present strength and is obviously a hugely capable businesswoman. But there are too few like her – just five of the 100 companies are led by women. It is not their lack of talent which prevents more women reaching the very top. Family pressures play a part, but the feeling that men are the natural leaders in business is an even greater obstacle. Janet is an ideal role model for other women, running both a massive company as well as rearing a family, and let us hope that more females are given the opportunity to follow in her footsteps.
