Leave sport alone

The bone-headed protest by Union flag demonstrators outside Crusaders' football ground on Saturday seems to have been a deliberate act of provocation to stir up trouble.

As a result the police had to take action to remove the protesters and, while some local politicians have expressed reservations about how this was done, the rule of law must be paramount.

The protest led to the cancellation of a key game between Crusaders and Cliftonville despite the attempts by both clubs to ensure a peaceful outcome. The Union flag protesters are playing the wrong game by targeting sport, and they will win no friends or support by doing so.
