Less than masterful tribute to Hurricane and his main rival
Alex Higgins was a genius on the snooker table. Yes, he was an idol with feet of clay, but he inspired a generation to play the game before his own flame burned out.
His rivalry with Steve Davis, his polar opposite in personality and playing style, is recalled in the BBC iPlayer film The Rack Pack.
Higgins was the right man at the right time to popularise a game with a slightly shady image and Davis was the man to cash in on that popularity. His was the tedium of success - a risk-averse but winning style. Both deserve their place on the pedestal when the history of the game is discussed. They also deserve more nuanced tribute than this film.
