Let's hope Downey brothers bring sporting success to Belfast pub game

Brothers Seamus and Henry Downey have always been winners. They were both members of the only Derry GAA football team to win an all-Ireland title and enjoyed illustrious careers in club games as well.

Now, it seems, they are determined to conquer new fields by buying six of Belfast's best known pubs for more than £4m. But that may well be one of their greatest challenges. The pub trade has seen hard times recently and the continuing recession is stifling consumer spending. And as the brothers know from their sporting days, supporters – and customers – can be fickle.

What is encouraging is that local people are making a big investment in local businesses and we hope that the brothers' winning mentality will bring success to their venture.
