Lidl's expansion is vote of confidence in once-great district

East Belfast was once described as the forge of the British Empire, being the site of the world's largest rope works, the shipyard and major engineering works. Those days are long gone and the area's reputation in recent times has been blackened by racism and gangsterism.

But the decision of German discount supermarket chain Lidl to expand its operation in Connswater retail park is good news for the area and a much-needed vote of confidence after Dunnes and Tesco supermarkets pulled out of the park some months ago. Perhaps it will be the catalyst for further development in this historic area.
