Man United's late Milk Cup withdrawal leaves sour taste

In the past 25 years some of Manchester United's greatest players including David Beckham, Gary Neville, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs have graced Northern Ireland's premier youth football tournament, The Milk Cup. News that the club have pulled out of this year's competition is a bitter blow to the organisers given The Red Devils' huge following here.

It leaves the organisers with a short time to find and bring a suitable replacement team, but such is the appeal of the tournament it will survive. Yet, it is another indication of how the biggest clubs are losing touch with their grass roots base as the financial rewards grow.
