Mature Rory McIlroy shows why public are still sweet on their hero
Rory McIlroy, the world's best golfer, is well-used to getting out of the rough, but even his aplomb was tested last week when he was being interviewed during the rugby match between Ulster and Connacht.
The PA system played Neil Diamond's hit Sweet Caroline which is a favourite at the Kingspan Stadium. This may, or may not, have been a reference to Rory's former fiancée Caroline Wozniacki, but whatever way it was intended, he smiled ruefully and handled the situation well.
Rory has matured with fame, and there is another side to this young man who is such an outstanding sportsman. His charity work for children, and his tact in paying tribute to Lewis Hamilton who became BBC Sports Personality of the Year instead of him - some would say unfairly so - has shown that Rory is a champion human being as well as a champion golfer.
