Milk Cup's legen-dairy link to football sadly ended

From humble beginnings in some of Northern Ireland's darkest days, the Milk Cup youth soccer tournament has become a shining light in the sport.

It regularly attracts teams from around the globe and some of the biggest names in the game. Beckham, Rooney, Scholes and Fowler first displayed their burgeoning skills on the fields around Coleraine. Sadly, the Milk Cup will soon be no more. The Dairy Council has withdrawn its sponsorship after 30 years. It was a perfect match – milk, kids and sport – reinforcing the message of healthy exercise and diet. But it has left a rich legacy and such is the standing of the tournament that it should have little difficulty finding a new source of funding and more stars of the future will continue to make their reputations here.
