Moderator's tenure means he must hit ground running
The Presbyterian Church is a very democratic one, but that presents very great challenges for each Moderator who serves only one year. It leaves him little time to make an imprint on the work of the Church or to create a proper debate on the challenges facing it, in common with many other Churches.
The new Moderator, the Rt Rev Dr Frank Sellar, takes up the post at a time when Presbyterianism continues to wrestle with issues such as attitudes to homosexual clergy, or the possibility of a woman becoming Moderator, or even ecumenism. We will barely have gained an insight into the man when his term of office will have finished.
