Mollie a shining example of how politicians ought to act

Mollie Holmes, who has died, was the epitome of an old-fashioned public servant. She felt an intense desire to work for the betterment of those she served as a councillor for an astonishing 30 years and sought no higher honour than to be mayor of her beloved Ballymoney.

At a time when cynicism about politics is at an all-time high, it is a measure of the esteem that Mollie was held in that she has been lauded by many even though she left active politics in 1985. Even then she worked unceasingly within the community, performing a shop opening at the age of 100. We will not see her likes again.
