National Trust's land acquisition at Mount Stewart good news
Mount Stewart is one of the jewels in the National Trust's crown in Northern Ireland and will be an even more popular visitor attraction when the £7.5m project to restore the house on the estate is completed in the next few weeks.
But even more exciting is the news that the trust has invested £4m in obtaining the 1,000-acre demesne surrounding the property. Its setting made the area prime development land, but that fear has now been extinquished.
Instead, the trust has ambitious plans to open up hitherto unseen parts of the demesne and also create walking and cycling trails, which will attract visitors who might otherwise have given Mount Stewart a miss.
All those who helped make this purchase a reality deserve high praise for their vision.
