New chief constable will be facing a baptism of fire
In spite of tensions between the two parties, it is encouraging that both Sinn Fein and the DUP could at least agree on one thing – the next chief constable of the PSNI.
He is George Hamilton, who has wide experience here and in Scotland at a high level of command, and he will be well aware that he will need all his operational and political craft in his new post. He will be taking up the post at one of the most inflammatory times of the year, and it could be a literal baptism of fire, given the experiences of previous years.
Other issues in his in-tray include the continuing dissident republican threat, the growing level of racism and the need to continue the emphasis on community policing. It is a challenging job and one which will probably bring him more brickbats than thanks.
