New Miss NI is a role model who should not be belittled
People have differing views on beauty pageants, with some feeling that they are outdated and denigrating to young women. But that is a somewhat demeaning attitude towards those contestants.
For, as the new Miss Northern Ireland Emma Carswell proves, these young women are very good role models. She volunteers with a local suicide prevention charity, is training for a cycle ride to raise money for the Children's Hospice and is a university student.
She is determined to make a positive contribution to society but in the meantime is keen to enjoy her year-long reign.
Why should we begrudge her that wonderful experience?
