New Year awards honour our stars and unsung heroes alike
The New Year honours bestowed on Tony McCoy, Carl Frampton and James Nesbitt are fitting recognitions of their abilities in their chosen fields and testament to their standing in the community at large. These are men who have brought great honour to the province and deserve to have that reciprocated.
But it is equally fitting that the often unsung heroes of Northern Ireland are also honoured. It is people like Liam McHugh, who has raised £115,000 for research into cystic fibrosis, or 89-year-old Jean McFarland, who has worked in the tea bar of the former Erne Hospital, who are the caring backbone of our society.
