One eel of a delicacy
Lough Neagh eels are a delicacy throughout the world, except at home. They are a prime export and the first local product to be awarded special status by the EU. Now with news that fish's shelf life is shortening because of environmental problems in the lough, perhaps it is time to put it on Northern Ireland plates.
Maybe we should have a special jellied eels Cockney-style festival to promote the fish and help its producers. Or if that is not to local taste, what about celebrity chef Paul Rankin's suggestion of making eels part of our summer barbecues? Now that would really be something different.
