Our fabulous Bake Off boy has risen to the occasion

Aerospace engineer Andrew Smyth from Northern Ireland may not have won last night's Great British Bake Off but he can still hold his head high.

Indeed, he was judged to be the winner of the technical section of the final, possibly a reflection of his day job skills, and has done himself and the province proud during the contest. Not only was he the only man in the final but also the youngest contestant and it was only in the last challenge that he was pipped to the winning line. His boyish enthusiasm was a delight throughout the series, which is the last to be screened on the BBC. Will it retain its huge audience on Channel 4 or will it fall flat?

Father would be so proud of his twins' charity appeal 

Editor's Viewpoint There are many demands on our charity from deserving causes but it would be a hard heart which is not moved by the appeal by twins Amy and Liam Murray for donations to the Cancer Focus Christmas appeal. Having lost their father Liam to cancer six years ago, they know the value of the services offered by the organisation. Cancer is expected to hit one in two people in the coming years and there will be many households with empty chairs this Christmas...
