Pathetic politics behind grounding of aviation open days

Editor's Viewpoint

Published 05/08/2015

The refusal of OFMDFM to sanction two open days by an aviation charity at the former Maze Prison site shows the puerile nature of politics here. Sinn Fein won't allow the open days to go ahead because the DUP has blocked plans to develop the site as a peace and reconciliation centre.

The two issues have nothing in common and the Ulster Aviation Society is being penalised for something over which it has no control. The open days could boost its coffers by 40%.

In a week when the last surviving Dambusters pilot died, we can wonder if this is simply an abuse of the freedom that he and his courageous friends won for us so dearly.
