Paying the penalty

The humiliation of former Cabinet minister Chris Huhne and his ex-wife Vicky Pryce was completed yesterday when both were jailed for eight months for perverting the course of justice.

A decade ago he persuaded her to say she was driving when his car was spotted speeding and she took the penalty points on her licence.

Both had high flying careers and both now find their reputations in tatters. But far more importantly their family is also in pieces. It was such a trivial offence to lie and lie again about, but it set in train a series of events which had catastrophic results for the couple.

It is a telling parable of ambition, deceit and revenge.
