Punish this cruelty
GIVEN man's inhumanity to man, it is scarcely surprising that dumb animals can also be at the receiving end of vicious treatment.
Yet it is difficult not to be moved by what happened to a greyhound found abandoned in Newtownabbey. Its ears were hacked off so that tattoos -- stamped on racing greyhounds -- could not be used to identify its owner.
Such cruelty must be eradicated and the greyhound racing industry must play its part in ensuring on-going traceability and also in educating owners.
Anyone found guilty of mutilating a defenceless animal should face a deterrent penalty when brought before the court.
Dogs may be a man's best friend, but certainly some men do not repay that loyalty.
