Remarkable Mollie shows no signs of quitting in golden years

Today is the 101st birthday of Mollie Holmes, a former Mayor of Ballymoney who is an extraordinary lady in her own right. She is Northern Ireland's oldest surviving politician who became a councillor away back in 1955, and who still sits on a number of health and charitable bodies.

Mollie was always an independently-minded person and her scrupulous even-handedness won her the respect of Ballymoney councillors who elected her as mayor for eight successive terms from 1977 to 1985.

Now that is quite a remarkable record.

Her driving force was always to help other people, and she has done so magnificently. She has also shown us all that advanced years do not mean that we should cease trying to make a valuable contribution to society.
