Roads toll shocking

The tragic deaths of three more people at the weekend on our roads brings this year's total so far to 21. This is over twice as the figure for the same period last year.

If 21 people had died here in an explosion or some terrorist incident there would be a massive outcry, but the deaths of a similar number in road accidents over a certain period do not have the same impact.

Yet the latest statistics should shock all of us deeply.

The death of even one person on the roads is one too many. "Drive carefully" is not a mere slogan. It is an urgent piece of advice that might one day save your life, and that of others.
